Becoming a TA with Greet the Day
If you’ve been following along with this blog for a while, you may know that I received my Oncology Massage training with Greet the Day. Greet the Day is a fantastic non-profit organization that works to improve the quality of life for people affected by cancer. They focus on integrative oncology care that uplifts the body, mind, and spirit of a person living with cancer, and they offer these services free of charge to patients. Their education division provides accredited advanced oncology education for professionals working in the wellness and caregiving industries. Since 2003, Greet the Day has been successfully working to improve the experience of cancer recovery.
This September, I traveled south to the busy streets of Los Angeles to TA one of Greet the Day’s
education classes. The class I assisted with was their Introduction to Oncology Massage class, which is available to certified massage therapists, aestheticians, and current students of massage. The purpose of the class is to educate spa personnel on how to provide safe massages and facials for long-term survivors of cancer. Cancer survivors have a life-long risk of lymphedema, chronic fatigue, and other issues, and it is important for massage therapists and aestheticians to understand what these conditions are. The class focuses on how not to trigger lymphedema, and how to create a safe spa environment by understanding how a compromised lymphatic system can come under stress. By giving this introductory class to spa personnel who work with the general public, we can help make sure that more people who get massages and facials are treated in a safe and healthful way.
My goal in assisting with Greet the Day's class is to be able to co-teach Introduction to Oncology Massage right here in Sacramento, starting in 2020. I will be working in partnership with Michelle (an oncology-trained CMT based in Roseville) to bring this opportunity to our area. We are very excited to share the basics of Oncology Massage with massage therapists in our community! Ultimately, we hope to be able to teach Greet the Day's full Oncology Massage Foundation Class in Northern California as well.
